Abstract

The mengkrengan leaf (Polygonum barbatum L.) is a plant that has not been widely studied. This plant is known to contain various secondary metabolite compounds with pharmacological potential. This study aims to identify the secondary metabolites present in the extract of mengkrengan leaves using a phytochemical screening method. Extraction was carried out using the maceration method with 96% ethanol as the solvent. The resulting extract was then tested using specific reagents to detect the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids. The analysis results showed that the mengkrengan leaf extract contained secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids, while alkaloids were not detected. The presence of these compounds supports the pharmacological potential of this plant, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activities. This study provides preliminary information on the bioactive compounds in mengkrengan leaves, which can serve as a basis for further research in the development of herbal medicines.
