ANTIBACTERIAL POTENCY OF Cajanus cajan to Staphylococcus epidermidis

One legume plant suspected of containing flavonoids such as quercetin, luteolin, and kajanol is the pigeon pea plant. Due to its flavonoid content, pigeon pea plants have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antitumor properties. This study aimed to identify the antibacterial compounds found in pigeon pea plants and determine their antibacterial activity, as measured by the inhibition zones of various pigeon pea extracts against Staphylococcus epidermidis.
This study was pre-experimental, using a maceration extraction method with 96% ethanol, n-hexane, and ethyl acetate solvents. The extracts tested for antibacterial activity were ethanol extract, n-hexane extract, and ethyl acetate extract. Antibacterial activity was observed from the inhibition zones on semisolid agar media, indicated by the clear zone.
The results showed that the antibacterial compounds contained in pigeon pea extracts include flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, polyphenols, and steroids. In the bacterial inhibition zone test, the 96% ethanol extract had a more dominant inhibition zone than the n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts. This can be observed through the inhibition zone ranges in 96% ethanol of 16.2±0.475 mm, ethyl acetate of 15.2±0.757 mm, and n-hexane solution of 14.4±0.321 mm. The effectiveness range for the inhibition zone against Staphylococcus epidermis bacteria is in the low to moderate range.
